On bringing one book

A small argument against the kindle, with apologies to its inventors and to the airline that lost my last one.

I have nothing against a kindle. I have something against having every book on the kindle. The argument is not about screens; it is about constraint.

A trip with one book is a trip that includes that book. You read the parts you would have skipped. You re-read the parts you liked. You finish it on the train two days from home and then you are without a book, which is also fine, and which is the part of the trip where you start, finally, to think.
